Week 7

The county I choose would be Africa. I really only know what I have heard about the culture and the many issues individual who live there suffer from. I would first make myself knowledgeable about the reason for the family coming in contact with me as a social worker. What are the family’s values and religious beliefs in regard to government involvement that I should be aware of.

I feel that me be culturally responsive towards the families needs and religious background would   allow me the ability to know how to work with the family effectively and will benefit the family in knowing that I am aware and respectful of their culture

  1. Laketha,

I would agree that it is important to know as much about why the family has moved here and try to find out as much as possible about the culture and education. I also want to do all I can to be culturally responsive to our families so that they will know that I have their best interest at heart and am willing to do what I can to make their transition as smooth as possible.
    Great post!
    Thanks for sharing!

  2. Hi Laketha,
I think that people in Africa face many challenges and being respectful of their culture allows them to feel more comfortable in their interactions with others that are trying to help.

  3. Hi Laketha,
I think that it is a good idea to first find out why you need to be contacted. That would give you a lot of information from the family and about the family. I also agree that being culturally responsive is the best choice. It will benefit everyone. Thanks for sharing.

  4. Hi Laketha,
Thank you for sharing your country with the class. I too chose a country within Africa, Morocco. I have always had a fascination with this country, but never took the time to learn more about the country. I agree that I only know what I see and hear on the news about the challenges they face over there. I like you idea of finding out what caused them to immigrate to the US. I would also do some research and possibly reach out to others familiar with diversity in the social work field that could offer some advice. I think I would also try to talk with someone from that country and find out more information on that specific family. It would definitely help you before they came to you, and they may be more open to discussion with someone they felt took the time to learn more about them.

  5. Laketha,
I chose Somalia in my post. Many places in Africa have extremely different cultures than what we are used to. Educating oneself on the customs of the new pupil will allow him or her to have a much smoother transition and as you mentioned, they will know that their own culture is still valued.
